किसी जंगल में एक उल्लू रहता था। उसे दिन में कुछ दिखाई नहीं देता था, इसलिए वह दिनभर एक पेड़ पर अपने घोंसले में छिपकर रहता था। सिर्फ रात होने पर ही वह भोजन के लिए बाहर निकलता था। एक बार की बात के गर्मियों का मौसम था। दोपहर का समय था और बहुत तेज धूप थी। तभी कहीं से एक बंदर आया और वह उल्लू के घोसले वाले पेड़ पर आकर बैठ गया। गर्मी और धूप से परेशान बंदन ने कहा – “ऊफ, बहुत गर्मी है। आकाश में सूर्य भी आग के किसी बड़े गोले की तरह चमक रहा है।”
बंदर की बात को उल्लू ने भी सुन लिया। उससे रहा नहीं गया और बीच में ही बोल पड़ा – “यह तुम झूठ कह रहे हो? सूर्य नहीं, बल्कि अगर चंद्रमा के चमकने की बात कहते तो मैं इसे सच मान लेता।”
बंदर बोला – “भला दिन में चंद्रमा कैसे चमक सकता हैं। वह तो रात में चमकता है और यह दिन का समय है, तो दिन में सूर्य ही चमकेगा। यही कारण है कि सूर्य की तेज रोशानी की वजह से बहुत ज्यादा गर्मी हो रही है।”

उस बंदर ने उल्लू को अपनी बात समझाने का बहुत प्रयास किया कि दिन में सूरज ही चमकता है चंद्रमा नहीं, लेकिन उल्लू भी अपनी ही जिद पर अड़ा था। इसके बाद उल्लू ने कहा – “चलो, हम दोनों मेरे एक मित्र के पास चलते हैं, वही इसका निर्णय करेगा।”
बंदर और उल्लू दोनों एक दूसरे पेड़ पर गए। उस दूसरे पेड़ पर उल्लुओं का एक बड़ा झुंड रहता था। उल्लू ने सभी को बुलाया और उनसे कहा कि दिन में आकार में सूर्य चमक रहा है या नहीं यह तुम सब मिलकर बताओ।
उल्लू की बात सुनकर उल्लुओं का पूरा झुंड हंसने लगा। वह बंदर की बात का मजाक उड़ाने लगें। उन्होनें कहा – “नहीं, तुम बेवकूफों जैसी बात कर रहे हो। इस समय आकार में तो चंद्रमा ही चमक रहा है और आकाश में सूर्य के चमकने की झूठी बात बोलकर हमारी बस्ती में झूठ का प्रचार मत करो।”

उल्लुओं के झुंड की बात सुनने के बाद भी बंदर अपनी ही बात पर अड़ा हुआ था। जिस देखर सभी उल्लू गुस्सा हो गए और वे सारे के सारे बंदर को मारने के लिए उसपर झपट पढ़े। दिन का समय था और उल्लुओं को कम दिखाई दे रहा था इसी वजह से बंदर वहां से बचकर भाग निकलने में कामयाब हो गया और उसने अपनी जान बचाई।
कहानी से सीख
पंचतंत्र की यह कहानी हमें सीख देती है कि मूर्ख मनुष्य कभी भी विद्वानों की बात को सच नहीं मानता है। ऐसे मूर्ख लोग अपने बहुमत से सत्य को भी असत्य साबित कर सकते हैं।
There lived an owl in a forest. He could not see anything during the day, so he used to hide in his nest on a tree all day long. He used to go out for food only when it was night. Once upon a time it was the summer season. It was afternoon and it was very sunny. Just then a monkey came from somewhere and he came and sat on the tree of the owl’s nest. Troubled by the heat and the sun, Bandan said – “Oops, it is very hot. The sun is shining like a big ball of fire in the sky.
The owl also listened to the monkey’s talk. He could not stay with him and said in the middle – “You are telling this lie? Not the sun, but if the moon was to shine, I would have believed it to be true.
The monkey said – “How can the moon shine during the day? It shines in the night and it is day time, so the sun will shine during the day. This is the reason why it is getting very hot because of the strong light of the sun.”

That monkey made a lot of effort to explain his point to the owl that the sun shines only during the day, not the moon, but the owl was also adamant on its own insistence. After this the owl said – “Come on, we both go to a friend of mine, he will decide it.”
The monkey and the owl both went to each other tree. On that other tree lived a large flock of owls. The owl called everyone and asked them to tell you all together whether the sun is shining in size during the day.
Hearing the owl, the whole flock of owls started laughing. He started making fun of the monkey talk. He said – “No, you are talking like an idiot. At this time, the moon is shining in size and don’t spread falsehood in our settlement by telling a lie that the sun is shining in the sky.
Even after listening to the flock of owls, the monkey was adamant on its own point. Seeing this, all the owls got angry and they pounced on him to kill all the monkeys. It was day time and the owls were less visible, due to which the monkey managed to escape from there and saved his life.
Moral of the Story: This story of Panchatantra teaches us that a foolish man never accepts the words of scholars as true. Such foolish people can prove even the truth to be false with their majority.
