एक बार की बात है सुंदरवन नाम के जंगल में बलवान शेर रहा करता था। शेर रोज शिकार करने के लिए नदी के किनारे जाया करता था।
एक दिन जब नदी के किनारे से शेर लौट रहा था, तो उसे रास्ते में सियार दिखाई दिया। शेर जैसे ही सियार के पास पहुंचा, सियार शेर के कदमों में लेट गया।
शेर ने पूछा अरे भाई! तुम ये क्या कर रहे हो।
सियार बोला, “आप बहुत महान हैं, आप जंगल के राजा हैं, मुझे अपना सेवक बना लीजिए। मैं पूरी लगन और निष्ठा से आपकी सेवा करूंगा।
इसके बदले में आपके शिकार में से जो कुछ भी बचेगा मैं वो खा लिया करूंगा।”

शेर ने सियार की बात मान ली और उसे अपना सेवक बना लिया। अब शेर जब भी शिकार करने जाता, तब सियार भी उसके साथ चलता था।
इस तरह साथ समय बिताने से दोनों के बीच बहुत अच्छी दोस्ती हो गई।
सियार, शेर के शिकार का बचा खुचा मांस खाकर बलवान होता जा रहा था।
एक दिन सियार ने शेर से कहा, “अब तो मैं भी तुम्हारे बराबर ही बलवान हो गया हूं, इसलिए मैं आज हाथी पर वार करूंगा।
जब वो मर जाएगा, तो मैं हाथी का मांस खाऊंगा।
मेरे से जो मांस बच जाएगा, वो तुम खा लेना। शेर को लगा कि सियार दोस्ती में ऐसा मजाक कर रहा है,”
लेकिन सियार को अपनी शक्ति पर कुछ ज्यादा ही घमंड हो चला था। सियार पेड़ पर चढ़कर बैठ गया और हाथी का इंतजार करने लगा।
शेर को हाथी की ताकत का अंदाजा था, इसलिए उसने सियार को बहुत समझाया, लेकिन वो नहीं माना।
तभी उस पेड़ के नीचे से एक हाथी गुजरने लगा।
सियार हाथी पर हमला करने के लिए उस पर कूद पड़ा, लेकिन सियार सही जगह छलांग नहीं लगा पाया और हाथी के पैरों में जा गिरा।
हाथी ने जैसे ही पैर बढ़ाया वैसे ही सियार उसके उसके पैर के नीचे कुचला गया।
इस तरह सियार ने अपने दोस्त शेर की बात न मानकर बहुत बड़ी गलती की और अपने प्राण गंवा दिए।

Once upon a time there used to be a strong lion in the forest named Sundarbans.
The lion used to go to the banks of the river to hunt everyday.
One day when the lion was returning from the bank of the river, he saw a jackal on the way.
As soon as the lion approached the jackal, the jackal lay down at the feet of the lion.
The lion asked oh brother! What are you doing.
The jackal said, “You are very great, you are the king of the jungle, make me your servant.
I will serve you with full dedication and devotion. In return, I will eat whatever is left of your prey.”
The lion obeyed the jackal and made him his servant.
Now whenever the lion went to hunt, the jackal also used to accompany him.

The jackal was getting stronger after eating the leftover meat of the lion’s prey.
