Chhath Puja is also known as Surya Shashti, Chhath, Chhathi, Chhath Parv, Dala Puja and Dala Chhath.

Chhath Puja will start from 17 November 2023. On this day the house is cleaned and purified. After this, Chhathvati starts the fast by taking a pure vegetarian food after taking a bath.

According to one belief, Chhath festival started in the Mahabharata period. First of all, Suryaputra Karna started worshiping the Sun God. Karna was an ardent devotee of Lord Surya. He used to stand in water till waist for hours every day and offer Arghya to the Sun God.

Shashti Devi protects all the children. Shashthi Devi is also called Manasputri of Brahma. It is believed that with the blessings of Goddess Shashti, the empty lap gets filled, hence the importance of worshiping Shashti Devi on the sixth day after the birth of children. In the local language, Shashti Devi is called Chhath Maiya.

Chhath, a great festival of folk faith, is celebrated every year. The festival of Chhath is considered a great festival of faith. Chhathi Maiya is worshiped on the sixth day of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. It is believed that the devotees who worship Chhath get happiness, prosperity, wealth, glory, fame and honor. It is said that the children of women who observe this fast get long life and happiness and prosperity. Along with this, observing this fast also gives blessings of a healthy life.

Chhath festival is one of the few difficult festivals of India which lasts for 4 days. In this festival, Sun God and Chhathi Maiya are worshiped by keeping a fast for 36 hours and they are offered Arghya. This fast is also done for the fulfillment of wishes. Along with women, men also observe this fast. There is a bath on the Chaturthi Tithi of Kartik month, followed by Kharna on the second day and Arghya is offered to the setting sun on the third day. 1st day of chhath puja
Take a bath: November 17, 2023, Friday

On the Chaturthi Tithi of Kartik Shukla Paksha, the first tradition of Chhath Mahaparva is followed. The Chaturthi of Kartik Shukla Paksha is celebrated as bathing and eating. According to this tradition, first of all the house is cleaned and purified. After this, Chhathvati starts the fast by taking bath after taking pure vegetarian food. All the other members of the house take food only after the fasting members have eaten. According to the rules, on this day rice, gourd curry and lentils are taken and only rock salt is used in the food.

2nd day of chhath puja
Kharna – 18 November 2023, Saturday

On the second day of Kartik Shukla Panchami, devotees observe a day-long fast and eat food in the evening. It is called ‘Kharna’. As the prasad of Kharna, rice kheer made in sugarcane juice is made with milk, rice pita and ghee Chupdi roti. No salt or sugar is used in it. After consuming Kheer, a fast of 36 hours is observed. The focus is on purification of body and mind on Kharna Tithi.

3rd day of chhath puja
Arghya to the setting sun: 19 November 2023, Sunday

The Shashthi Tithi of Kartik Shukla Paksha is considered to be the main day of Chhath Puja. In the evening, after all the preparations and arrangements, Arghya soup is decorated in a bamboo basket and the family and all the people of the neighborhood along with the fast go towards the Ghat to offer Arghya to the setting sun. All Chhathvrati perform Arghya Daan collectively on the banks of the pond or river.

4th day of chhath puja
Arghya to the rising sun – 20 November 2023, Sunday
Arghya is offered to the rising sun on the morning of Kartik Shukla Saptami on the fourth day. On this day, devotees stand in the water before sunrise and offer Arghya to the rising sun. After offering Arghya, people break the fast by consuming prasad.
